The Charleston Center for Photography (CCP) is a resource center and community for photographic enthusiasts and professionals. Our goal is to share information and expertise in an open atmosphere where photographers can nurture and further their talents.
CCP was founded by photographers Jack Alterman, J.D Cummings, Roy Moss and Dr. Dave Russin. It started as a local grassroots photography club and eventually grew into workshops, classes, exhibits and lectures taught by a number of talented Charleston-based professional photographers. Jack Alterman passed the helm to former combat photojournalist, Stacy Pearsall, in May 2009. Not straying far from the original founders’ vision, Pearsall expanded CCP’s photography eduction programs.
As of November 1, 2013, Mahmood Fazal is the new owner of CCP. Fazal, a Charlestonian by way of Pakistan and Kuwait, expands his role from photography instructor to owner. Pearsall continues her relationship with CCP as consultant. “I’m thrilled to keep CCP in the family,” Pearsall says. “Furthermore, Mahmood has great plans for a new direction, which is really inspiring. I really believe CCP will thrive.”
Indeed, Fazal’s vision for CCP is already moving forward. He is a dedicated supporter of the art of photography, as much as he is dedicated to educating novice and more advanced photographers, helping them along in the quest for the perfect picture. Although he pursues personal art projects, Fazal is most strong in his commitment to community involvement by CCP. Under his leadership, expect CCP to reach out to more communities throughout the Lowcountry. The Charleston Center for Photography will operate in various locations throughout the Charleston area. The free lectures will continue to be offered at 654D King St. The locations for classes, workshops and exhibits will be specified on the website.
Fazal has been a photography instructor for nearly a decade and has taught various classes including Photoshop, Introduction to Photography, Night Photography, and Painting With Light. He is an award winning photographer whose experience includes weddings, commercial, political, family portraiture, and photo illustration. He has been a part of numerous art shows including Atalaya and Spoleto. Fazal lives in Mt. Pleasant with wife, Chelle Fazal and has two sons.
